Commitment to Creating an Accessible City

The City of Toronto is committed to creating an accessible City and building an inclusive society while providing an accessible environment in which all individuals have access to the City’s services and programs in a way that respects the dignity and independence of people with disabilities. The City affirms its commitment to meet the requirements of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA)Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) and the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Meeting Accessibility Standards: AODA

The 2011 accessibility regulations requires the City to ensure alignment of its accessibility policies and practices with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) legislation and its standards in specific areas. Given the City’s commitment to meeting its obligations on accessibility, a new policy will be established in 2017.

Multi-Year Accessibility Plan

The City’s Multi-Year Plan provides a strategy for the City to guide implementation activities to meet accessibility standards in service provision and employment.

Toronto Accessibility Advisory Committee (TAAC)

TAAC provides advice to City Council on:

  • elimination of barriers faced by people with disabilities
  • implementation of accessibility standards as required by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA)
  • acts as a liaison with external bodies.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference was adopted by City Council on February 6, 2012.

Accessible Customer Service

In August 2009, to affirm and strengthen the City’s resolve to become barrier free, City Council adopted the Statement of Commitment to Creating an Accessible City which is consistent with the principles and standards created under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.

Accessible Recreation
